Brands Rerecord

The Clock is Ticking

The Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL) is reminding brand owners that all Montana brands must be rerecorded by December 31, 2011.

MDOL Brands Division administrator John Grainger said that while there may seem like plenty of time to rerecord brands, there's no good reason to wait until the last minute.

"We're encouraging people to rerecord their brands as soon as possible," Grainger said. "There have been cases in the past where people didn't rerecord their brands in a timely manner then forgot to do it and ended up losing their brands."

The 2011 brand rerecord began on January 3, 2011. Since then, more than 25,000 of the state's 55,000 active brands have been rerecorded. Sixty-two percent of those brands were rerecorded online.

"Online rerecord has been working great," Grainger said. "It reduces the amount of time it takes brand owners to rerecord their brand(s), and it saves the state time and money. What used to take weeks now takes about 10 minutes."

Rerecord.mt.gov is fast and easy, and can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Brand owners can also rerecord brands via U.S postal mail, or in person at the department's headquarters in Helena.

The online rerecord service is the result of an alliance between state government and the private sector. It was cooperatively developed and is supported by the Montana Department of Livestock, the Montana Department of Administration's State Information Technology Services Division, and Montana Interactive, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of eGovernment provider NIC (Nasdaq: EGOV).

MDOL Encourages Use of New Online Rerecord Service

10 minutes for 10 years: New service offers convenience, speed

The Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL) has modernized a long-standing Montana tradition: Brand owners can now rerecord their brand(s) online at rerecord.mt.gov.

Prior to the online service, brand owners were required to mail or walk in their rerecord forms to the department, which would then manually enter the more than 55,000 rerecord forms received.

"The creation of an online solution has not only significantly reduced the time it takes brand owners to rerecord their brand(s), but it also saves the state time and money," said Christian Mackay, executive officer for the Board of Livestock. "What used to take weeks now takes about 10 minutes."

The 2011 Brand Rerecord began on January 3, 2011. Since then, nearly 15,000 of the department's 55,000 active brands have been rerecorded, with more than 11,000 of those occurring online. MDOL encourages brand owners to utilize this new convenient service.

"Rerecord.mt.gov is fast and easy, and can be accessed from your home computer 24 hours a day, seven days a week," Mackay said. "Rerecording online allows brand owners the peace of mind of knowing that their brand has been secured immediately and that they have preserved their place in history."

Brand owners have until December 31, 2011 to rerecord their brand(s).
